Summer Garden

Today Melissa and I visited the Summer Garden in St. Petersburg.  The Summer Garden is only a 10 minute walk from our apartment.  It is the oldest garden in St. Petersburg and it was layed in 1704.  There were originally 220 statues but only 91 have survived throughout the years.  They were created by Italian sculptors in the beginning of the 18th century.  We enjoyed meandering through the lush gardens and admiring the beautiful statues.  We were amazed at the pristine condition of the grounds and we even saw workers meticulously cleaning each and every fence post with a small brush!

The summer garden is located on the Neva and stretches to the Nevsky Prospekt.  We walked along the Neva canal and saw old men fishing.  We began our adventure fairly early so we almost had the entire park to ourselves.

The railings around the park were created over a period of 15 years.  They were completed in 1784.  We were impressed with the intricacy of the designs.

The Summer Palace of Peter the 1st was built to be used for personal use and was built to resemble a Dutch style home.  The house seemed small for Russian standards but we enjoyed looking in the windows and you can see a picture of myself below sitting below the entry.  This was a modest two story palace that overlooked the Neva.  We had such a wonderful time exploring the gardens.  We even found one sculpture where the subject was wearing cowboy style boots!

Please watch our short video below.  We had fun putting it together!
